15 Black-Owned Businesses to Support in 2020

Supporting Black-owned businesses is a small step we can do to effect change in the fight for racial justice and social inequities. Shopping from Black-owned businesses is one of many ways to join this fight, other than marching in local protests, signing online petitions, and calling your elected officials. I want this blog post to be a resource to anyone out there who is confused or is generally unaware of how to begin supporting Black-owned businesses. Let me help you out by introducing 15 black-owned businesses to support in 2020.

#1: BFYNE

According to the About page on Bfyne’s website, Buki Ade (a designer, entrepreneur, and Nigerian-American) was inspired to start a swimwear line after she realized that the swimwear industry lacked creativity and representation of African designers. Featured on Vogue, Glamour, and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Bfyne swimwear is an unapologetic tribute to women’s curves and confidence. With a motto like “unleash your inner Fynebabe",” I am hooked Bfyne’s about page goes on to say how Bfyne designs and creates body conscientious clothing for any woman who is fashion-forward, self-confident and willing to steal the spotlight.

You can purchase Bfyne swimwear on their online store www.bfyne.com.

I love the meaning behind this business. Inspired by Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman” poem, the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign brings awareness to social causes. Phenomenal Woman supports many nonprofits, including but not limited to: Families Belong Together, Justice for Migrant Women, and TGI Justice.  These reasonably priced clothing items help spread the message about being a phenomenal _______. Phenomenally Black, Phenomenal Woman, Phenomenal Teacher - this website has it all. Shop their adult collection of unisex t-shirts, sweatshirts, leggings, bodysuits, and long sleeve shirts on Phenomenalwoman.us.

#14: Oh Happy Dani

Danielle Coke is an Atlanta-based illustrator and social media strategist that uses art and colorful doodles to address social inequities. These artworks help start difficult conversations about faith & racial justice, which is a conversation we need to have more than ever in 2020. I love that her graphics are eye-catching and easily sharable. You can further the conversation of racial justice by sharing her work (and crediting it) on social media or order one of her various products on her website.

#15: The Honey Pot Co.

The Honey Pot Co. is the first plant-based feminine care system. Everything is free from chemicals, toxins, artificial fragrance, or anything synthetic. They have also partnered with #HappyPeriod, a non-profit organization that brings menstrual health products to those in need while reshaping the conversations about periods, menstrual inequality, and taboos (according to their blog post linked here). For each #HappyPeriod vagina pin sold by The Honey Pot Company, they will donate 2 liners + 1 pad to help the most vulnerable of people that deal with vagina-related problems.
