Finding Your Home Decor Style

I have been working from home for the past 6 months, and after looking at my living space I realized that I did not have a cohesive decorating theme, or style. And I wanted to change that, but didn’t know how! After speaking to some friends & looking online, I found some resources for my readers that can be helpful with finding a home decor style specific to the individual. So let’s five in!

Take the Mr. Kate “What’s My Aesthetic?” Quiz

I started getting more into home decor after watching Mr. Kate on Youtube, and they are such a fun family to watch in their interior decorating adventures. And I believe in one of their videos, they talked about a quiz they made on their website called “What’s My Aesthetic?” which I knew I wanted to take.

My overall result was Bohemian, but Mr. Kate also breaks down your unique aesthetic blend. And here are my results for that!

18% - Farmhouse / Beachy

18% - Vintage-Eclectic

18% - Bohemian

9% - Industrial

9% - Quirky / Whimsical

9% - Minimalist

9% - Traditional

9% - Modern / Dramatic

The tips I received from the Mr. Kate quiz results were:

  • You love a homey and rustic vibe!

  • Wood tones in various light and medium shades are heavily emphasized

  • You’ll want to emphasise wood furniture like a large wood table with vintage art like large old clocks, metal washboards and white-washed wooden crates.

  • There is an element of Shabby Chic in the Farmhouse / Beachy aesthetic so don’t be shy to incorporate some small vintage florals or subtle blue and white stripes in the pillows or bedding

  • Shop Farmhouse / Beachy at stores like Joss & Main or Restoration Hardware and find vintage accessories at flea markets and thrift stores

I also found a great article from Curbly.com about the 10 Interior Design Style Quizzes that are actually worth your time. Definitely worth a read if you have some time!

Go on Pinterest and search “Home Decor”

Pinterest does a great job of generating content based on the content you interact with. And starting with a general search term will get you more into the rabbit hole you were intending to go down. You might see some recommended categories at the top of your Pinterest feed, with different home decor styles that people have searched up before. Click on what intrigues you, and you will slowly start to get an idea of what your home decor style is.

And remember - you do not have to stick to one niche of home decor. You can combine different decorating styles & meld designing aesthetics into your own personal style.

Ask your friends for styling advice!

Some of my friends post photos of their living spaces on Instagram, and it gets me so excited to start decorating my space!

I talked to my close friend, Shelby, about how she found her decorating style, and here is what she had to say:

My love for Mid-Century Modern was born when I was trying to remodel my bedroom, I was starting from a blank slate and got everything new. For me, the sleekness gets timelessness for MCM design is what draws me in. The crisp lines with rounded details sprinkled in, I think, looks so classy.

There are other styles like Farmhouse, Boho, Scandanavian, modern and contemporary. Sites like Wayfair and Amazon offer style quizzes to help you shop!
